Yale University is known in the art world for its Masters of Fine Arts program, which is consistently ranked among the best in the world, and is known to have trained some of the biggest names in contemporary art including John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage, and Mickalene Thomas. But the Yale undergraduate program for fine arts is also a top-ranking program with some notable artists on its faculty such as the legendary photographer Gregory Crewdson, and printmaker Meleko Mokgosi. At Yale’s undergraduate School of Art, students can receive a BA or BFA in graphic design, painting, print-making, photography, and sculpture. Each semester, the Fine Arts Gallery of the Department of Art also hosts several events that allow students to present their work to professional artists and faculty. MFA students present at the Graduate Thesis Exhibition and undergraduates present at the BA Capstone Show in the campus-based Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery. California College of the Arts began in 1907 as the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts. In the BFA Art program, students balance studio courses with theory studies, culminating in a capstone course and thesis project. At the graduate level, the School of Design has a Design MA with a Specialization in Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design. The Art BA/Graphic Design/Visual Communication Program requires 120 units, with 57 units in the major. Course examples for the program include Graphic Design, Advertising Art Direction, Problems in Advanced Design, Interactive Design, Directed Field Work in Art, Typography, Digital Image Processing and Illustration, Art and Motion, Color and Digital Photography, and Video for Artists. In addition to all USC Roski has to offer, Design MFA students benefit from the school’s partnership with organizations such as the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and the opportunity to participate in discussions, seminars, and visits from leaders in the design industry. The Graphic Design MFA at California Institute of the Arts has an Integrated Media (IM) Concentration, which combines IM seminars and critiques with specialized coursework and access to elective courses offered across the institute.
